xkcd accurately summarizes the majority of children's fantasy in three panels. Too true. I'm surprised children's fantasy hasn't revolted.
Without even trying hard, I can think of (to varying degrees of accuracy--the children are kicked out of the world they discovered):
--The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
--The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper
--Seaward by Susan Cooper
--Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

"An Abundance of Merlins"
Nov. 24th, 2009 09:31 amTitle: An Abundance of Merlins
Fandom: The Dark is Rising Sequence / Merlin (UK TV series)
Genre: Humor
Summary: Merlin meets himself. It doesn’t go well.
Disclaimer: The show Merlin belongs to the BBC and Merriman Lyon is from The Dark is Rising Sequence, property of Susan Cooper.
Author's Notes: If you happen to be familiar with one of the fandoms involved but not the other: Merlin is a TV series retelling of Arthurian legends. The Dark is Rising has a character named Merriman Lyon, who is also Merlin.
I had a lot of fun writing this.

Year review meme
Dec. 20th, 2007 09:08 pmTaken from
starstruckduck and
lotesseflower. Post the first sentence from each month.
January
As it's another month, it's time for another poem.
February
Love Is Not All
March
Title: Abstinence
(It was an Indiana Jones drabble.)
April
I wrote this sometime last school year, when I happened to see the movie on TV.
May
You know that novel-length plotbunny I got slammed with about a month ago?
June
My second super-long entry of quotes, this time from Possession by A.S. Byatt, which is a novel that more people need to read.
July
I've just read the post in
deliasherman's LJ, that
ellen_kushner mentioned in hers.
August
I've been working on a story that involves Scandinavian folklore, so I end up reading lots of fairy tales.
(And the story still is not finished. *rolls eyes*)
September
Yet again, I'm asking for opinions.
October
Originally written for a discussion of the TDiR movie adaptation in
ashkitty's LJ.
(It ended up turning into an entire drabble series. Good times.)
November
Guess who gets to spend next semester writing about folklore, mythology, and fairy tales for Anthropology?
December
On LJ's new policy about adult content: this can't possibly end well.

Last bit of movie-talk
Oct. 6th, 2007 08:34 pmI decided that I would rather laugh than cry about The Seeker, and so I wrote some more for the parody of it. They aren't strict drabbles, as I couldn't keep them at 100 words, but it's close enough. Some are better than others, but I had lots of fun writing it.

movie news
Feb. 20th, 2007 06:05 amFirst of all, Wales was great. Details will be posted after I´m caught up with my paper journal.
There´s been more casting done for The Dark is Rising . Knee-jerk reaction: They cast Christopher Eccleston as the Black Rider ?!?! Having watched a season of Doctor Who , I can´t at all imagine him as the long red-haired agent of the Dark. I might not be able to see this movie.
(No opinions yet on Merriman and Will, as I haven´t seen any of their movies.)

Mad Skillz
Jan. 9th, 2007 06:02 pmI might have mentioned that around Thanksgiving I was listening to the audio book of A Wrinkle in Time . Mom asked what I was listening to, I tried to describe the plot, and she got interested. This ended in her listening to the audio book, then immediately reading A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet . (I really should re-read those last two.) And I've almost gotten her to promise to read The Dark is Rising Sequence while I'm in Spain. Let's hear it for bookaholics!
When the last eagle flies...
Dec. 23rd, 2006 07:48 pmNaturally, I thought of this moments after clicking the "post entry" button about the musicals.
One of my greatest fears is that I will never be the kind of writer that I want to be. More than making a living by writing, I worry more about making the readers feel. There are writers like Peter S. Beagle (e.x. The Last Unicorn ) and Susan Cooper (e.x. Silver on the Tree ) and The Neverending Story and Lloyd Alexander (e.x. The Prydain Chronicles ) whose stories have me crying before the end because they are that wonderful. Poets too, like Anna Akhmatova. I'm happy and frustrated at the same time when reading these books--happy because I love them so much, and angry because I still don't believe that I will be able to write that spectacularly.
I'm so caught up in this at the moment that I'm not able to think clearly and write all that I want to on this topic. But it had to be said now.
(I shall have to find the audiobook of The Last Unicorn .)

Against the Dark
Dec. 7th, 2006 08:38 pmDuring Thanksgiving vacation I listened to A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle as an audio book. I'd forgotten how much I loved her writing. So much of the book is about fighting against the Dark and hopelessness. About halfway through, I was reminded of similar elements in The Dark is Rising Sequence . The dark rider would have fit in perfectly on Camazotz. It's been several weeks since I thought of this connection, so I can't remember all that I was going to say.
What do you think?
Also, anybody interested in writing a crossover? (holds up a plot bunny dressed like Mrs. Whatsit)

Why can't my Halloween every be as interesting as Will and Bran's?
A question for The Dark is Rising fans: Does anyone know if the brenin llwyd and the milgwn (apologies if I misspelled) are based on Welsh myth, or did Susan Cooper make them up out of thin air?
Happy Halloween/Samhain!
Just over six hours until NaNoWriMo begins in this time zone...good luck everyone.
