Rewatching Escaflowne recently and I got to episode 3 (Fanelia's been burned down, Allen and his crew, and Dilandau are introduced). I definitely did not appreciate the comedy in it last time I watched this show.

So at the beginning of the episode, our main characters are in the woods at night. Mole Man's been chased off, Hitomi and Van are both unconscious (fainted and knocked out, respectively) and Allen's just standing them. When the next scene opens, Hitomi is waking up in a bed (SURROUNDED BY EVERY GUY THERE WHILE ALLEN HITS ON HER, WHAT THE HELL UGH) and Van wanders in soon. I'm just...how did Allen get them both back there? Okay, he's older than both Hitomi and Van who are on the scrawny side and he could have carried them back, but that only allows for moving them one at a time. How far are they away from that fortress, anyway. Does he stick one of them up in a tree for safety while toting the other one back. Does he somehow hand his owl for backup?

And how does the crew of the Crusade react? Are they surprised or is this just an average Friday night for them?

It's like that riddle about the fox, the goose, the sack of grain, and the river, but so much funnier.

Title: It Takes Practice

Fandom: Vision of Escaflowne
Summary: Hitomi watches the Winter Olympics non-stop and Van thinks anybody who doesn’t die during it should win a medal.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Escaflowne or the Olympics.
Author’s Notes: Sort of a companion to No Gold Medal, which I wrote during the last Summer Olympics. The inspiration for this ficlet can be boiled down to two things: 1) I will never tire of writing “fish-out-of-water” Van silliness, and 2) I think Hitomi would totally be a sports fanatic whenever she had the chance. Possibly contains some OOC but I was having too much fun to care.

Who's an expert on winter now? )

I was re-watching some episodes of Escaflowne recently and realized that the floating Zaibach fortress (seriously, how does that thing even work?) reminds me of Howl's castle. I'd love to find a ficlet or a comic where the two "buildings" accidentally switched places one day and everyone was extremely confused.

Title: No Gold Medal

Fandom: Vision of Escaflowne
Summary: The appearance of a dragon during an Olympic event is cause for disqualification.
Disclaimer: I don’t own either Escaflowne or the Olympics.
Author’s Notes: While watching this year’s Olympic track events, I started to think about what tends to happen to Hitomi when she’s in races. And then I couldn’t stop giggling.

Is this a bad time? )

As I mentioned earlier, I wrote two ficlets for Yuletide Madness this year. I was a little embarrassed when it turned out that the prompts had been filled already in the main Yuletide collection but I'm still glad with how they turned out.

Title: Cultural Boundaries
Fandom: Vision of Escaflowne
Summary: It's Van's turn to adjust (or not) to technology and culture in Hitomi's world

I don't think I mentioned it before, but Vision of Escaflowne was one of the first anime series I watched when I was in high school and being introduced to anime. It's not the best series ever (a number of plot holes and you can tell that it was originally supposed to be 39 episodes long instead of 26) but I still have a soft spot for it. Earlier this year I had an idea for a long AU, which started a re-watching of the series for ideas. For your entertainment, here are the observations and questions I've been noticing as I go along.

I've become enamoured with several anime abridged series in the past year. I love parodies of just about any kind to begin with and clicked on links immediately when I found out about them. These are my favorites:

Sailor Moon Abridged
I found out about this one when I was getting ready to move last summer and devoured all the posted episodes in about a week. They're hysterically funny, primarily making fun of the English dub. (Even the voices sound like the dub actors!) The thing that impresses me most is that the group of friends who does this has completed over 40 episodes and one of the movies, and they're still going.

Vision of Escaflowne Abridged
Some of the abridged episodes are shorter than I would like (around 5 minutes) but they're still hysterically funny. (Hitomi frequently breaks the fourth wall.) Currently, the creator has only two more episodes to go to finish the series. I can't wait to watch them but I'll be sad when it's finished.
