With Jacky's love of theatrics and time spent in Paris, I now desperately want an x-over with Phantom of the Opera. The ALW musical takes place in 1881, so it's too late for Jacky herself to turn up, but she and Jamie could have a grandchild who's into acting and ends up at the Opera. He or she could team up with one of Lisette's grandkids! Hijinks ensue.

I just found out that Hulu has all of Cowboy Bebop available. Marathon time! I still need to write that Cowboy Bebop/Bloody Jack Adventures crossover someday.

Season 2 of Carmilla begins on June 2 and Season 3 of Hannibal begins on June 4.

This is gonna be fun.
amelia_petkova: (lenore)
Thanks God I got this done before Season 2 starts airing. Time for a look at the other characters! Cut tags for spoilers still apply.

There are several parallels between the Dean and Akio. read more )

Perry is Wakaba, if anyone. They just want everything to be normal, normal, normal. Sorry, but that’s not happening.

Danny could be Juri. They’re both tall, badass redheads. On a non-Utena note, Danny says in Episode 7 that the Summer Society has an annual Adonis Festival and Hunt. Now I want to write fic about that, or fic where the Summer Society engages in Bacchic celebrations during which they engage in Maenad-type behavior. It goes badly whenever any Zeta boys try to infiltrate.

Will is Touga—they’re both sleazy minions.

I’m not sure that LaFontaine and Kirsch have character equivalents. Kirsch isn’t always very bright but he’s too nice to be Saionji.

Silas University and Ohtori Academy are also far too much alike for comfort. read more )

Meta time! Have my thoughts on all the similarities between Revolutionary Girl Utena and Carmilla (just the web series, not the book). This ended up split into multiple posts, because it got really long. Major spoilers for both works are behind the cuts. Also, excuse any times when I’m a bit vague about elements from Utena because it’s been a couple of years since the last time I watched it.

Let’s start with our leading ladies, because Laura and Carmilla are so much like Utena and Anthy that it’s not even funny.

Watching Episode 20 of Carmilla while working on my meta entry, and I'm laughing at Laura's puppet theater. There's a scene cut between the beginning of Carmilla's backstory and the puppet show, so we don't know how long Carmilla was stuck sitting there while Laura set things up. Did she already have that stage set up? If so, why and where the hell was she storing it, the bathroom? Also, what about the puppets? Did she have all of these things or did she just leave Carmilla there while she looked up sock puppet instructions on Pinterest?

Now I want a deleted scene where Carmilla plays with the puppets when Laura's not around.

Rewatching Escaflowne recently and I got to episode 3 (Fanelia's been burned down, Allen and his crew, and Dilandau are introduced). I definitely did not appreciate the comedy in it last time I watched this show.

So at the beginning of the episode, our main characters are in the woods at night. Mole Man's been chased off, Hitomi and Van are both unconscious (fainted and knocked out, respectively) and Allen's just standing them. When the next scene opens, Hitomi is waking up in a bed (SURROUNDED BY EVERY GUY THERE WHILE ALLEN HITS ON HER, WHAT THE HELL UGH) and Van wanders in soon. I'm just...how did Allen get them both back there? Okay, he's older than both Hitomi and Van who are on the scrawny side and he could have carried them back, but that only allows for moving them one at a time. How far are they away from that fortress, anyway. Does he stick one of them up in a tree for safety while toting the other one back. Does he somehow hand his owl for backup?

And how does the crew of the Crusade react? Are they surprised or is this just an average Friday night for them?

It's like that riddle about the fox, the goose, the sack of grain, and the river, but so much funnier.

Recently I saw a movie in which one--just one!--brief scene takes place in an archives. Our hero has gone there to do research about a magical object. After being told which area of the archives to visit, we next see him at a table with fragile, one-of-a-kind records spread out across the table in front of him. And what does the archivist/Reference Desk person/random person in charge do? SHE WANDERS OVER WITH A FULL CUP OF COFFEE AND SETS IT DOWN NEXT TO ALL THE IRREPLACEABLE RECORDS, THAT'S WHAT SHE GODDAMN DOES, LADY YOU ARE FIRED IMMEDIATELY.

Flames on the sides of my face.

Because online archives/libraries ARE THE SHIT.

New York State Historic Newspapers is an online, free collection of newspapers from all around New York that you can browse through or search. So I looked up "fox sisters" (as in Kate and Margaret Fox, of 19th century Spiritualist movement fame) and have already hit gold. I don't know how anything else I can find is going to top this:

"The Fox sisters are outdone by a Polk county (Ga.) girl of 14. She can place her hand on a chair and it will walk around the room. She places her hand upon the table and and it moves as she wishes. She placed her hand upon a chair in which a man sat, and the chair--man and all--moved at her touch."

I will admit that part of my hilarity was to originally misreading the excerpt as "She can place her head on a chair and it will walk around the room."

In case something goes screwy with the link, this is found in The Ogdensburg advance and St. Lawrence weekly Democrat, (Ogdensburg, N.Y.), January 03, 1884, Page 3, Image 3

It's Peter S. Beagle's birthday today. Hi, Peter S. Beagle! Today's plans have shifted to include listening to The Last Unicorn soundtrack. I'd go on a reading marathon of the books I own by him, if I didn't have so much to get done before work.

And talking about this reminds me of how much I LOVE his writing. If I ever get to the point where I can write half as well as him, I can die happy.

ETA: The Last Unicorn is over 40 years old!

Turns out it's a good thing that I read a number of Tumblr blogs despite not having an account, or I never would have heard of this. Ebooks Tree is a website claiming to have free ebooks for download (though it turns out there's some financial skeeviness involved if you try to sign up for a membership). Turns out they've taken a lot of fan fic from AO3 and posted it without the authors' permission, as well as original published fiction.

Thankfully all of the AO3 stuff seems to have been taken down in the past couple of days (they even seem to have had my self-published book on there, the assholes). Still, I thought it would be good to do a post about this in case anybody reads my blog and hasn't seen what happened on Tumblr.

Diane Duane has a very useful post on how to search for your writing online in case it's been pirated elsewhere.

A discussion at FFA.

A post by the OTW/AO3 folks on the situation when it was happening with helpful information on how to fill in a DCMA takedown notice.

1. Guillermo del Toro is directing an episode for Season 3 of Hannibal! Does this mean that the Pale Man can kill Hannibal? That would be awesome, even though I'd never be able to sleep again.

2. Speaking of del Toro, you could have knocked me over with a feather when I found out that his upcoming horror film Crimson Peak is set in Buffalo, NY.

3. I have started seeing flowers when I go walking outside and it's wonderful.

4. I couldn't stand the Taylor Swift song "Blank Space" until somebody on FFA recently said that they want a Will/Hannibal fanvid set to that song, and now I laugh whenever it comes on the radio because I can't stop mentally matching up clips from the show to go with the lyrics.

5. I'm signed up for the Conlan Press/Peter S. Beagle newsletters and there's going to be a new edition for The Last Unicorn DVD released this June and among the extras will be an audio commentary track and a documentary OH MY GOD GIVE IT TO ME NOW. The most recent newsletter also includes a link to a vid of somebody doing a cover of the title song and it's lovely.

I'm rewatching Season 2 of Hannibal and loving it. As you may have figured out, I just got through the horse episode.

assorted spoilers from now on )

That's all for now, though I'm sure I'll have more later. I also need to remember to post that entry about parallels between Utena and the Carmilla web series.

Today I started things out by repeatedly yelling "Screw you!" at the television while eating breakfast.

I'm watching Season 1 of Hannibal for the first time (I've already seen Season 2) and I'm currently on the brain scan episode. Of course, I yell at many of the characters during the rest of the season but this episode has increased the frequency.

I just found out that the Carmilla webseries posted a Christmas episode! And if Wikipedia can be believed, there's going to be a Season 2. I would confirm this one one of the series's official sites, but it's too much hassle to follow one show across multiple, constantly-updating social media platforms. I tend to stick with the YouTube videos, and that's it.
amelia_petkova: (pre-raph Persephone)
OKAY, LET'S DO THIS. I finished reading Wild Rover No More and I have definite Thoughts.

cut because of series-ending spoilers and because this gets LONG )

I'm glad that this book was a good one, since L.A. Meyer has died and it's probably the last we'll see of Jacky unless his wife or whoever his literary executor is has more material that ends up published in the future. (Earlier this year Meyer commented on one of the threads on the Bloody Jack message boards--I can't remember which one it was right now--talking about a novel he'd written in the BJ universe that features Jacky traveling in time to California[?] during the Summer of Love. I still can't decide if he was trolling or not.)

Happy birthday to The Nutcracker! Today is the anniversary of its first performance. Reminds me that I still need to write that Princess Tutu fic where Drosselmeyer and Tchaikovsky meet.
