it's that time of year

Classes at my university begin this upcoming Monday. Even though I had been aware of this, I somehow forgot it meant that this would be (freshman) move-in weekend. I went to campus this morning to do some errands and noticed immediately. It's not too bad so far--the crowds aren't huge yet and there was still plenty of parking. I am very grateful that I didn't have to get in line for anything at the bookstore. You can bet that I'll avoid the campus like the plague this weekend. (On a related note, I've gotten a temp job at the bookstore in the textbook department, starting bright and early on Monday. It'll be insane but at least I know what I'm getting myself into and I won't have to be on a cash register.)
Ah, I remember the days of moving into dorms. My first two years, I lived on the third floor of buildings that didn't have elevators. Not exactly fun. The last two years, I lived on the first floor and we could pass smaller items in through the windows. There was practically no parking, of course. My school was really strict about moving out times, too--at the end of the school year, you had to be out within 24 hours after your last exam. This wasn't too bad for me because I lived nearby but I always felt sorry for the Long Island students who had to deal with that in the middle of the week instead of the weekend. Even when I graduated (on a Saturday), the school said you had to get all of your possessions out by noon that same day. The ceremony ended around 11 a.m.
College dorm buildings and regulations, I don't miss you at all.
