here we go adventuring

amelia_petkovaYesterday my mother and I finally made it to the Scandinavian Festival in Jamestown, NY. We invited ourselves to stay with some relatives and went over there bright and early Saturday morning. This being something we had looked forward to for a while, it was of course drizzling for the first hour. The sun came out later. There were many people in (more-or-less) traditional costume, including children as young as five years old. They made a Maypole (with real flowers, I was glad to see) and carried it in a procession through the area set aside. They set it up next to a dala horse that was about six to seven feet tall at its head.
There were plenty of things to buy and good food. Plenty of lingonberries, though part of me was disappointed that there wasn't lutefisk. Not that I would have touched it with a ten-foot pole, but just to say that I saw it. Lots of pretty jewelry, especially amber. Given that all the items I loved (mostly clothing) were far out of my price range, I escaped with having bought only food.
The highlight of the afternoon was checking out a Viking SCA group. I participated in axe-throwing. Yes, really. Children as young as eight years old were allowed to do it, though everyone had to sign a release form beforehand. The form could have been distilled down to "Yes, these are real weapons. If you do something stupid after we've told you not to and injure yourself, it's not our problem." The shafts were about a foot long and though the axe heads had good weight, they weren't too heavy. You were allowed to do five throws before it was the next person's turn. I never hit the target. I'm not too surprised (I'm not much of a thrower) but it was still fun.
