Sarah Palin scares me because whenever I think about her, I'm reminded of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

On a more humorous note, how many of you (Americans) remember This Land from the last election? It'd be fun if somebody created one for McCain and Obama.

As I mentioned in my LJ, I think it's best to not focus on Palin. While it's easy to attack her, it's important to remember that the election is McCain vs. Obama, not Palin vs. Obama.

Also, I'm increasingly suspecting that the McCain camp is happy to put Palin up for interviews and the like because in anything but a scripted speech McCain comes across as a curmudgeonly old asshole.

However, what worries me most about Palin is not what she stands for per se, but the signal her nomination sent. It was unquestionably a nod to the evangelical vote, and as a liberal pro-environment, pro-choice, pro-queer pagan, I find pretty much all of the evangelical agenda scary as hell.

It might make things run smoother if we stopped viewing presidential/vice-pres. candidates as celebrities because as everyone knows, Americans have a celebrity fetish. Jeez.

I don't think that's particularly realistic. Name me an important political figure in history who was not a celebrity.

Besides, compared ot the rest of the world, Americans are pretty quiet about celebrities.
