Now that I'm halfway through my junior year of college, it's time to start thinking of what to do when I graduate. (I don't want to enter the real world!!!) Still not completely liking the idea of graduate school.

My request this time is: can you think of any jobs that would apply to a person with an English major and Anthropology minor? (I might also add a Spanish minor. I'm still annoyed that my college doesn't offer Anthro as a major.) Serious, or on-crack ideas are both invited. Just no teaching; I don't have the patience. (Staying in Spain after the Valencia program ends in May is not an option. This summer I was informed by Mom that even if I meet my one true love in Spain, she still expects me to come home when the semester ends. lol)

Hm...

My mother majored in anthro. She now teaches kindergarten. She tells me that it has actually come in very handy - especially the bits about deviant behavior and riot control.


You might go for a position with the CIA or some other part of the intel community. they're always looking for people to help interpret other cultures.


With an English degree you could try for work in a publishing house. THose jobs are hard to land and you're likely to get burnt-out too.


Overall, of course, there *are* jobs for work as a writer. Not writing fiction, but rather ad copy, manuals, press releases... remember that everythign you see in text was written by someone, likely a professional writer of some stripe.
The key to finding such a job is not in the degree. Professional writing values results more than certificates. As such, you would be well-served by building a portfolio to advertise your skills.
