trick or treat?

I have to say, I'm disappointed in the growing numbers of trick-or-treaters who come to our house on Halloween without any costumes. Sometimes I ask "And what's your costume?" I give metaphorical points if they can come up with an excuse on the spot but too many just say, "Um...me?" I understand that you might not have the money to spend on costume shopping, but come on! Show some creativity! Have standards! Necessity is the mother of invention, after all. Just off the top of my head, here are some no-cost or cheap costume ideas:
--wear a sheet and pretend it's a toga/mummy bandages/whatever
--use mom's make-up as face paint
--wear parents' clothing and pretend to be from the past
--ketchup as fake blood
On a still-disappointing but more amusing note, when I ask some of the silent children and teenagers, "What do you say?" at least half of them respond with "Please". I was actually looking for "trick-or-treat" but at least they're aware of politeness.
