amelia_petkovaI adore YouTube: you can find just about any movie or series posted on there. The only trick is that you have to finish watching it before it gets removed for copyright violation.
I'd heard briefly about the anime Princess Tutu but had never watched it. For lack of something to watch, I looked it up and found that a couple of users had posted most of the episodes. I have to admit that at first I wasn't too sure about the premise: There's a duck, who turns into a girl, who turns into a superhero ballerina?! Like many magical girl anime it's somewhat silly, but there's lots of good material in it. I don't think any of you have seen it but I'd recommend it. Episode commentaries for the first season behind cut.
Episode 1
--Ahiru when she's babbling might be the most adorable thing ever.
--The ballet teacher is a cat? And he threatens to make the students marry him? That's so wrong on so many levels.
--[when Mytho is hanging out the window]: Please put some pants on.
--"Children who love stories, come over here!" So. Damn. Creepy.
Episode 2
--An anteater? This is starting to remind me of when animals spontaneously turn up and try to kill Nanami in Utena.
--I wouldn't mind the naked scenes played for laughs so much if the characters weren't children.
--"There is happiness for those who accept their fate. There is glory for those who fight against their fate."
--Was this seriously intended for a child audience?
Episode 4
--I love how they use music and influences from real ballets throughout the series. (And that they include the music sources in the credits.)
--Fakir is a real jackass, though it does make me wonder how he and Rue know Mytho's story, when Mytho himself doesn't seem to.
Episode 7
--Even though it doesn't last, I'm glad Ahiru's response was essentially "Fuck you" when Drosselmeyer informed her that her role in the story was supposed to be tragic.
--Drosselmeyer continues to be the creepiest old man ever. That he's supposed to be dead only makes it even worse!
Episode 8
--Ah magical girl anime, so filled with ho yay.
--Ahiru's "friends" used to be funny but now they're just annoying.
--Aww, Fakir may be an asshole but even he thinks ducks are cute.
--Angst, angst, angst!
Episode 9
--All these ravens...I feel like I'm watching The Birds.
--My favorite character might be the penguin who plays the piano.
Episode 10
--See, this is why magical jewelry is a bad idea. It might be pretty but you will lost it and the next thing you know, you're stuck as a duck.
--I think it's a requirement of magical girl anime that the characters be morons. Ahiru conveniently disappears and reappears on multiple occasions and nobody connects her to Princess Tutu (to be fair, Princess Tutu is a superhero ballerina and Ahiru sucks at dancing). Any idiot with two brain cells to rub together could figure it out!
Episode 12
--Okay, I'm still uncomfortable with the naked jokes for the underage character(s) but that was funny. I think Fakir's reaction is like any of us would have: "Hold on, so the class dunce turns into a duck? That's weird and...oh my God, I was nice to her on more than one occasion. I even hugged her! Crap!"
Episode 13
--Yes! Swan Lake references! God bless Tchaikovsky.
--Okay, just because a guy passes out in a body of water and disappears doesn't automatically mean that he's dead. You (the characters) shouldn't be angsting; you should be looking through the water and performing CPR! You're all morons.
Oh, I forgot! I don't remember which episode it is at the moment but one of the characters breaks the fourth wall within the story to talk to Drosselmeyer and he flips out. I couldn't stop laughing.
I'm looking forward to the next episodes.
