Downtown Abbey
Jan. 23rd, 2012 09:15 amMy mother and I finally got sucked into watching Downtown Abbey through out netflix trial. I missed the first episode but joined her soon after she started the second. I don't remember most of the characters' names yet but here are my initial reactions (not labeling for spoilers, because it's so early on in the series):
Maggie Smith makes the best faces
(in Ep. 2) When Matthew tells his new valet (?) that dressing another person is a silly occupation for a grown man it was like he'd kicked a puppy. The valet looked so sad! I find Matthew to be likable in many ways but he has a real problem with sticking his foot in his mouth.
Mr. Carson's deep, dark secret made me laugh
(one of the maids and the cook are talking before going to the hospital ceremony)
Maid: But he's (one of the other servants) nothing like Thomas.
Cook: No, he isn't!
(Mom and I start laughing)
I kept thinking that Mrs. Crawley looked and sounded familiar but I couldn't place her. Turns out her actress is Penelope Wilton, who was in Calendar Girls, which I have seen.
