I like puzzling over how things could have gone differently in stories. The one that I'm focused on right now: what if Wato hadn't been into Moriya?
Let's say Wato still goes to the photo gallery show at Dr. Irikawa's/Moriwaki's prodding but that's it. She doesn't go out for coffee with Moriya, or she does but that's it. He's a nice person but she wants to focus on her life right now and avoid anything to do with Syria. No future meetings. No romantic relationship. She's going to focus on Sherlock's cases as something to keep her mind distracted and try reconnecting with old friends, like from the Wakasugi episode.
There's no way Dr. Irikawa would let Wato go that easily, so how does she keep manipulating Wato and luring her farther in? Would it be Oh, I'm sorry you're not interested but that's all right, there are plenty of people in the world for you to connect with. By the way, I also run a group therapy session and I think it would be good if you tried it out.
And later it's revealed that all the other patients in the group therapy session are from the Dock.
