So I just finished reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

Yikes.

Spoilers, spoilers, nothing but spoilers ahead:

Merricat murdered her family, I knew it! The book never says why and I actually like that. I kept thinking of Lizzie Borden while reading this. Probably because it's a family murder and Jackson lived in New England, there were two sisters, and the community ostracized them.

Charles is an asshole. I'm sorry that nobody killed him. It was blatantly obvious that he was only after the money, he was cruel to Uncle Julian, and I was worried that he would try to do something to Constance or Merricat.

I have to admit, the part where he kept trying to take away the safe full of money during the night of the fire was darkly hilarious.

Scariest part of the entire book: when the villagers are destroying the house after the fire's put out (was this written before or after "The Lottery"?), and then taunting Constance and Merricat when the girls try to escape.

When Uncle Julian said that Merricat was dead and had died in the orphanage, for a moment I believed it. Even though Merricat's been interacting with other people since the very beginning of the book, Shirley Jackson is SO GOOD that for that one moment I actually thought it was possible.

Talk about a creepy ending!
