cannot get over this

The good news: I finally got to read Code Name Verity! The bad news... I know at least a couple of people on my f-list have read it so you will probably know immediately what part I'm talking about when I say I got to That Event and immediately fell to pieces.
I had half-expected that Julie would be dead by the end of the novel but HOLY CRAP MADDIE SHOT JULIE AND SHE HAD TO DO IT AND "KISS ME HARDY" AND OH MY GOD, BREAK MY HEART WHY DON'T YOU?
On a less traumatic note, the plot twist of Julie's "confession" being mixed with lies is absolutely brilliant. Elizabeth Wein is a storytelling genius. I took the whole thing at face value for the longest time and then I realized OH YEAH, YOU MORON, OF COURSE SHE'S GOING TO LIE TO HER TORTURERS.
I don't plan on any of my characters dying anytime soon but if I can make people reach half as emotionally to my writing, I'll know that I'm going something right.
