IIRC, What Happened to Frederick got me interested in the show again after a long stream of episodes where I either only passively liked them or was annoyed by them, with brief bits I really liked. (The fairy tale part of Skin Deep almost lost me completely.) I wondered the same about the siren. (And, you know, most of these guardians of magic things/places.) August pressuring Emma to go out with him despite her refusals and how it was supposed to be "cute" have killed any chances that pairing had with me, much less his character, and I already disliked him before that.
What killed me about the intervention was the cute little red bows in her hair. Like, did they sneak those on her while she slept hoping she'd start acting as cute as she looked or something?
James in general is kind of...a well intentioned dude who's useful to have around, but not that bright. David too, except less so on the "useful" front. (It might aggravate us all a lot and he may be wishywashy, but it does make sense to a degree: he has the (fake) memories and feels/felt he should try to make it work despite no emotional connection to them and Kathryn is so supportive and honest that he'd feel like scum telling her he feels nothing and wants to break up. He's still rather douchey in general, but he's hopefully starting to shape up-I've seen a theory that the curse is a lot stronger on him because he's Snow's happy ending so even if everyone else ends up happy, Snow still won't have her happy ending if the curse is still making him the Bad Decisions King.)
