Thoughts on El Labertino del Fauno

I just finished watching the movie, and...

It was absolutely wonderful. I´m especially glad to have watched it during my time in Spain, as it takes place during Franco´s regime, and we are just now getting to the Spanish Civil War in History class.

I agree with those who do not like the English translation of the title: Pan´s Labyrinth. Whoever did the translating took creative license, and not in a good way. Pan is a faun, but he´s more of a demigod from Greek mythology. Also, it makes it possible for people to think that the movie is connected to Peter Pan.

The Captain is horrific. I can´t imagine how Carmen could have stood to marry him and have sex with him. He didn´t even care about her at all; he just as about says it when he tells the doctor that if it comes down to it, to save the baby. I had the bad but certain feeling from that moment on that the mother was going to die.

Was the Captain having the doctor give her poison?

Mercedes kicks ass. But why didn´t she stay to finish off the Captain?

I´m rather squeamish when it comes to movies. There were many times during this movie when I had to look away. I think it was well done, though, and shows how horrible things got. That poor stutterer. And the doctor, too. (Moronic of the Captain to kill him at that moment, though. After all, his wife was about to have a baby!)

Excellent special effects. Same reaction to the soundtrack.

Ofelia dies! Even though I knew the Captain was chasing her with a gun and was ruthless, I still hadn´t thought she would die. I don´t mind admitting I was crying at that point.

The only part I didn´t like was the ending to the fairy tale told by the narrator. It seemed like somebody was trying to do a "happy ending despite everything" but instead it gave me a jolt and ruined the mood that had been created.

Such a great movie.

EDIT: "Was the Captain having the doctor give her poison?" I mentioned it to my roommate on the way back home, and she reminded me that it was a sedative so that the mother would rest. The Captain just got screwed up because Ofelia dumped the entire bottleinto his drink.

Actually, the "happy ending" was where it clicked with me: if Ophelia *was* the princess, then her father was king of the underworld. How do you get there? By dying, of course.

And, um, her name was Ophelia. If ever there were a star-crossed name...

What I got from it was that everyone had their own fantasies about the world. Ophelia was the princess of the underworld. The Captain was a great hero. The doctor was a true healer. Mercedes was a dedicated freedom fighter. These were all true - from their point of view.

And from that, honestly, the one person I outright pity is the Captain. He alone had his fantasy shattered. He didn't die when Mercedes shot him - he died when he found out his father had broken the watch on purpose.
