Actually, the "happy ending" was where it clicked with me: if Ophelia *was* the princess, then her father was king of the underworld. How do you get there? By dying, of course.

And, um, her name was Ophelia. If ever there were a star-crossed name...


What I got from it was that everyone had their own fantasies about the world. Ophelia was the princess of the underworld. The Captain was a great hero. The doctor was a true healer. Mercedes was a dedicated freedom fighter. These were all true - from their point of view.

And from that, honestly, the one person I outright pity is the Captain. He alone had his fantasy shattered. He didn't die when Mercedes shot him - he died when he found out his father had broken the watch on purpose.
