I assume most of you are familiar with those lists "You Know You're From __________ When _______." I think I have one that trumps most of them. (The phrase might apply to other states on the Great Lakes but I don't know at the moment.)

You know you're from Western New York when: Lake-effect snow.

You know you're from Kalamazoo when all you have to hear is "Lake-effect" and you want to run far far away.

Our lake-effect weather is horrid, especially lake-effect snow. K'zoo is perfectly far away and yet close enough to the lake to get the worst of everything.

I swear, the words "lake-effect" must be etched into our subconscious by now. The moment I hear it: load up on groceries, buy road salt, don't drive to work, batten down the hatches!
